On Saturday I went on a wildflower nature walk at the Wild Horse Wind Farm. Yeah, the same place we went last summer. There were dozens of people there, most of whom were from the west side of the state. The guide was walking, talking, showing various types of plants. She was talking about how some had bloomed earlier and how others were yet to bloom.
A thirty-something man walked up to her and said, "We arrived late so could you explain what you mean by 'go to seed'?" I was amazed. How can someone get to that age and not understand that plants make seeds in order to propagate themselves? He and his wife had never been in Central Washington. The arid land was a total shock to him. They've lived in Seattle for two years and before that came from North Carolina. He didn't understand why things on our side are brown and grey.
He's lived in green places his whole life so how did he never understand all those plants came from a seed? Or maybe like groceries, he thinks that seeds come from a package.
