Well, wasn't the earthquake that just happened tectonically necessary?" :)
The geologist has a valid point, but it's like the stories that come up every so often saying the Mt. Rainier is an active volcano and is going to erupt. Yes, but when? The stories are always written by the media as if it was going to blow up tomorrow. You are aware, you prepare, but you don't avoid it because it might happen.

Somewhat related - OSU getting into a debate with the state geologist because they want to build a new building in a known tsunami zone. http://www.oregonlive.com/pacific-northwest-news/index.ssf/2014/12/state_geo...
In the worst case, if an earthquake struck near the coast, a resulting tsunami could hit shore in as few as 15 to 30 minutes."It will happen," McConnell said of a subduction-zone quake. "It's tectonically necessary to relieve that stress at some point.""We're not trying to scare people to death. We're just trying to help them to be prepared."Almost sure that Effie or I will now look at something in the future and think "well, that was tectonically necessary." :)
