That "bite" or indentation is where the moon is partially passing in front of the sun covering it over (i.e., the eclipse). Here is what it looked like with a large telephoto lens with filters that my friend, the head of the astronomy club, took that shows it way better. It was also taken at the beach and shows the sun sinking into the Gulf, although the water is blacked out for dramatic effect.
