There is going to be an episode of "The Score" on radio (and online) dedicated to Alan Rickman's roles. I heard just a brief announcement and I'm not sure exactly what date. I'm guessing next Saturday but it could be two weeks out. In any event, once broadcast, it will be available online for a couple weeks at allclassical.org http://www.thescore.org/2016/ http://player.allclassical.org/archive/the-score I started poking around trying to find specifics and ran across the following. These are some quotes from a 2011 NY Times article about a Broadway play in which AR plays the character Leonard. It sounded so "Snape" I couldn't help but share it. Especially AR's comment about how Snape turned out. There's more going on than just mean-spiritedness in Mr. Rickman's formidable Leonard, an international literary figure who spares no one's feelings. The director, Sam Gold's blocking indicates as much about the characters as the dialogue. While Leonard prowls the room with complete command, his students often huddle in motionless clumps, like petrified lambs eyeing a wolf in their midst. The mirror effect between the dynamic of the characters and that of the ensemble was not lost on its lead actor. Mr. Rickman said in an interview backstage before a recent performance. "There's Leonard and these four young writers. There's also an older English actor with four young American actors, and I think it's a much more fearful world for young actors now." Asked if his director or fellow cast members are intimidated by him, Mr. Rickman, 65, arched an eyebrow. In that voice that evokes a slow pour of black molasses, he said, "You'd have to ask them." Play author, Ms. Rebeck, acknowledged that, given the disparity of age and professional experience in the company, a certain degree of awe was inevitable. "Listen, it's not the warmest or fuzziest experience, working with Alan, and that's good," she said. "He's such a prince of a guy. But he can be scary." Merciless though his approach might be, he's there to steer the students in the right direction. "Leonard's motives are not ultimately vindictive," said Mr. Rickman, who knows something about playing moral ambiguity. The opening scene in the YouTube video is from HBP not DH2. I just read this in the comments (a response from the creator) at the end of the video: That first scene is an actual scene from the movies, it's one of the deleted scenes (because they thought his hurt face would give too much away about Snape being on the Light side); the song is in the half blood prince movie soundtrack and it's called "In Noctem"?

Feeling sentimental

On Wednesday afternoon for the very first time in over a year I decided to watch one of the Potter movies. I picked HBP because it is dark and moody. I'm writing on my story set at the end of GOF. I needed to see a more depressing story than most of GOF. Then Thursday I hear about AR's passing. Tonight I decided I wanted to hear his voice (see the subject line of the message!) so went off to YouTube to find a video. The one that always pops up is the "all Snape scenes in sequence" that I've watched before. I listened to it in the background while I was doing other things. Then I found another with a similar title: "Severus Snape (the bravest man, the whole story) character study" It starts with a scene from DH2 (I think) - the HW choir is singing and then a very sad scene where Snape is standing alone. Then it goes back to the beginning and progresses through all the books. I began to put it in the background when I noticed text on the screen. So I watched a bit, then started it over and paused it each time so I could read the text. What made this video so impressive is the interspersed text was from the books and it expands and expounds on scenes from the movie. There's even one place where the video uses a direct quote from one of JKR's interviews done after all books were published. That quote is EXACTLY one of the points I'm trying to make in my story. It was freaky to find it tonight. Given his time over again he would not have become a Death Eater, but like many insecure, vulnerable people he craved membership of something big and powerful, something impressive The video ends with a comment from (I think) the director of DH1 & DH2 saying "I love the notion of starting the film with Snape because he's such a central part of our story." A person who ready my Potter story on fanfiction.net suggested I enter it a contest being done on this web site: http://www.inkitt.com/contests I doubt I'll do it, but it is an interesting fanfiction site.
